National School Recognition Program – Unified Champion Schools
News | April 27th, 2018
Does Your School have What it Takes to be a National Banner Unified Champion School???
A Special Olympics Unified Champion School has an inclusive school climate and exudes a sense of collaboration, engagement and respect for all members of the student body and staff. A National Banner Unified Champion School is one that has demonstrated commitment to inclusion by meeting 10 national standards of excellence. These standards were developed by a national panel of leaders from Special Olympics and the education community and include activities/initiative supporting Special Olympics Unified Sports, Inclusive Youth Leadership and Whole-School Engagement. Banner Unified Champion Schools should also be able to demonstrate they are self-sustainable or have a plan in place to sustain these activities into the future. As of Spring 2018, there are 14 Banner Unified Champion Schools in South Carolina. In the first year, the process was open to only high schools. Last year, the process opened to middle schools and now elementary schools are also invited to apply for this distinguished recognition.
